Drawing what you cannot see

Why our first-term students spend a week drawing sound, weather and memory before they draw a single figure.

First-term wall, Friday afternoon

Every fall the first-term studio begins with an assignment that looks impossible: draw the sound of the shuttle bus, the weather on the morning you left home, a memory you are not sure is yours.

It is not a trick. Illustration is the work of making the invisible legible, and the habit starts here.

What the week teaches

Students learn to trust a mark before they trust a likeness. By Friday the walls are covered, and nobody asks whether it looks right; they ask whether it says something.
